Counseling with children and adolescents is a collaborative effort with the family. We work together with your child or teen and the parents/guardians to create a tailored plan to address their needs. Child and teen therapy often requires collateral (sessions with just family members/parents) and sessions with the whole or part of the family. We engage clients in this age range with developmental specific approaches to help the child or teen navigate challenges and have appropriate tools for moving through life.
First we start with a brief 15 minute complimentary phone consultation to discuss what you're looking for, questions you have, fees, and best therapist that will fit for you. Then you’ll connect with your therapist to schedule your first session. Before we meet, you’ll fill out paperwork. An intake form will be sent to you and your teen, if appropriate, to get us started. The first session for children usually will include the parents/legal guardians to help with building rapport with the therapist and helping with any other information needed. For teens, we usually let the teen decide if they want their parents/guardians participation in the first session.
Therapy can be short-term or long-term, it greatly depends on the issues we are working to heal. If they are single-incident events, we can often address those in 8 to 10 sessions using EMDR. If long-term we usually recommend a year or more, but we continue to check in to evaluate their progress to assess their readiness to complete treatment.
